Ronald Hulen Jones

Ronald Hulen Jones, 71, of Las Cruces, passed away on May 21, 2022 in Las Cruces.
Ronald was born in Kingsville, Texas to Elmer Hulen Jones and Myra Marcella Chandler Jones on June 29, 1950. He graduated from Alamogordo High School in 1968 and was a veteran of the United States Air Force. In 1978 He completed his Court Reporting training at the Stenograph Institute of Texas in Abilene, Texas and was employed with Jones Reporting Services in southern New Mexico for over 35 years. Ron was an excellent Certificate of Merit court reporter and reported many high-profile cases in New Mexico and Texas.
Music Ron was an accomplished singer/songwriter well known for his natural musical talent and singing voice. He sang with Night Rain, a duo with his brother Dee, and lead vocalist with Crystal Ship, a classic rock band, which entertained crowds in and around Las Cruces for many years. Some say he is now “singing with the angels”. Ron was a kind, gentle and humble man who never wanted to impose on others. He was a fan of the Dallas Cowboys and the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Ron was preceded in death by his father Hulen and his sister Jeanne. He is survived by his wife Karen R Jones of Las Cruces: son Brandon (Kathy) of Marietta, Georgia and daughter Cari (Chris) of Helena, Alabama: brothers Dale (Carolyn) and Dee (Diane): Grandchildren Amber Sides, Heather Sides, Ryan Jones and Connor Jones: and his mother Myra Marcella Jones of Las Cruces.
A Celebration of Life is scheduled for 2:00pm, June 25th at Graham’s Funeral Home, 555 West Amador, Las Cruces, NM 88011. An informal get together will follow the service.

Gina Hornbeck
of Lubbock, TX
October 6, 1957 - November 2, 2021 Gina Gruben Hornbeck of Lubbock passed from this life on Tuesday, November2, 2021. She was born in Seminole, Texas on October 6, 1957. Gina graduated from Tatum, NM High School in 1976 . After graduation, Gina worked at many jobs: waitress, communication operator for the NMSP, Pharmacy Tech before attending Amarillo Community College and graduated with an Associates Degree in Stenography and became a certified Court Reporter. Gina worked in district courts in Oklahoma and NM before establishing Gina Gruben, Inc., a freelance court reporting service in Roswell, NM.
Gina was a longtime member of the Abundant Blessings Church in Tatum, NM. She was also a long-time member of the Roswell Elks lodge and was an avid supporter of many of their charities, such as the Wounded Warrior Project. Gina was always very active was dedicated to her work and profession. She was also determined to live each day to the fullest!
In the early 2000’s she bought a Gold Wing Trike and that opened up a whole new world and a host of new friends. She upgraded her Trike to a Harley Davidson somewhere along the way and managed to survive flying off of a 50 foot cliff while riding a mountain road in AZ. Shaken as she was, that part of her life was too important to her to be deterred, so she bought another Harley Davidson trike and as soon as her wounds healed from the “trip down the mountain”, she was on the road again!
In 2010, she met Gene Hornbeck, and they married in 2014 in Tatum, NM, and made their home in Carlsbad, NM. Gina loved Gene, family, and ballgames. They attended many OU and Texas Tech games and Gina soon became an avid fan. Gene was truly everything she ever wanted, and her happiest days were the ones they spent together. They moved to Lubbock in April, 2020.
ROGER KENT PROCTOR
April 7, 1945 - April 5, 2021 (age 75)
Roger Kent Proctor passed away in his home with his son Patrick Patrick and his Daughter-in-Law Diana Proctor by his side on April 5th 2021. Following a long fight with Parkinson, and Dementia. He is Survived by his Son Patrick, Daughter-in-Law Diana Proctor. Patrick's Mother-in-Law Kathleen. His Brother Daryl, Sister-in-Law Marilyn. Also his 3 Nieces Jenna Harrington, Jordan Ortiz, Kyla Proctor. His 2 Grandkids Cody and Jillian Proctor, Daughter-in-law Salean and 2 Great Grand babies Mason and Alison. He was also survived by step Grandkids Katherine and Jay Hagan, Samantha New and Ramon Morales, and Timmy New. He also had Step Great Grand children, Landan, Kassandra, Nikki, Jackie, Kaylyn, and Jazlynn. He also had several other relatives. Roger was very involved at his Church of Christ where he enjoyed fellowship, and was very involved with the deaf community. He was a great teacher of sign language, and loved helping people. He also loved camping with Family and Friends. If You knew Roger, You know he was a Great Man, and would help with anything if he could. He was Loved by all his Family and Friends, and will be deeply missed.
 Jerry M. Potts(1945 - 2019) Jerry Mac Potts, age 73, passed away on April 3, 2019. He was born in Bonham, TX on June 28, 1945 to a farming family and was the younger of two brothers.
Jerry served his country for the U.S. Army in the Vietnam War and then the Pentagon with the Judge Advocate General as a 71E20 Court Reporter. He was honorably discharged as a SP6 in 1971 after receiving 2 overseas bars and 4 medals of honor including the Army Commendation Medal. In his civilian life, Jerry was widely considered one of, if not the best court reporter in the state of New Mexico for over 45 years, being specifically requested for some of the most well known cases in history including the New Mexico State Penitentiary Riot of 1980. He was an avid golfer and a passionate fan of the New Mexico Lobos, Texas Tech Red Raiders and Dallas Cowboys. He loved his family with everything he had, was a great friend to countless, and very well respected. He also had a sense of humor unlike any other and a particular love for his dog.
He was preceded in death by his parents Herman "Bill" and Olah Potts, grandson, Jerry Mathew Potts, as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins. He is survived by his brother Bill Potts and Bill's wife Sandra; son Jerry Michael Potts and Jerry Michael's wife Stephenie; and his daughter Jennifer (Potts) Ross. Grandchildren Andrew Duran and wife Erin; Vanessa Nieto, Zachary Potts, Dustin Ross and wife Tara, Lauren Ross and Jerome Nieto-Potts; as well as two great-grandchildren Robin Duran and Nathan Ross.Services will be held at the Daniels Family Funeral Home located at 7601 Wyoming Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87109 on April 26 at 1:00 pm with a reception to immediately follow in the chapel hall.

Deborah E. Trattel

Deborah E. Trattel a resident of Placitas, NM died Monday, July 2, 2018. She is survived by her husband of 17 years, Richard J. Estrada; daughter, Arianna Estrada; mother, Martha Trattel; sister, Beth Trattel and husband, Clay Bishop; brother, Andrew Trattel and wife, Keri; niece, Samantha Trattel; and numerous extended relatives and friends.
Deb was preceded in death by her father, George Trattel. She was born in 1960 in Schenectady, NY and obtained her associates degree in Court Reporting from Alford State University in NY. Deb worked for the court system in Rochester for six years before moving to Albuquerque. Deb began her own Court Reporting Business in 1997, Trattel Court Reporting & Videography. Deb was the consummate professional and was well regarded by everyone who worked with her. She married Richard in 2001 and together along with Arianna began their love of world travel and adventure. Deb was a Board member of NM Animal Protection and a dedicated lover and protector of animals. She loved her Dalmatians and was a truly loving and caring person. More than anything she was very proud of her daughter, Arianna, an A-Student and Club Soccer standout. She was a member of Las Placitas Presbyterian Church. Deb was a devoted and loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend. Deb will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life Service will be held on Thursday, July 12, 2018, 11:00 a.m. at Las Placitas Presbyterian Church in Placitas. Interment will follow at San Antonio De Las Huertas Land Grant Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made in Deb’s name to Animal Protection of New Mexico, 301 Gold Ave SW, Albuquerque, NM 87102.

Carolyn Kay Proctor
Carolyn Kay Proctor died at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque, NM on February 25, 2017 following a long term, increasingly debilitating illness. Her immediate family was near her side.
She was born September 22, 1946, in Lubbock, TX, the daughter of Warren and Marie Embree. Both parents preceded her in death. Kay is survived by her husband of 49 years, Roger Proctor; her son, Patrick Proctor; her daughter-in-law, Melissa; two grandchildren, Cody and Jillian of Moriarty, NM; and a niece, Jennifer Buckman. She also has one surviving sister, Virginia Luckey, of Temple, TX.
Kay graduated from Bovina (Texas) High School and attended Texas Tech University. After completing Southwest Business College, she spent her entire professional life as a court reporter and was an active partner of Proctor and Davidson, Inc. in Albuquerque. A well-respected member of the legal community, her career in Albuquerque spanned more than 30 years.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and member of the Church of Christ, where she remained an active participant until her failing heath intervened.
Her family wishes to extend special thanks to all the medical professionals who helped care for her over these last years.

Thomas Lee Garrett entered into the arms of Jesus on Tuesday, June 7, 2016, at his home. Thomas is survived by his grandfather, Perry L. and step-grandmother, Carolyn Randall of Belen; parents, Grayson W. and Carol E. Garrett of Albuquerque; two brothers, Michael P. and Jesse S. of Albuquerque; and sister, Sarah L. and her husband, CWO5 Jeffrey A. French-Lujan and their children, Emily, James, Joseph, Jesse, and Jackson of Camp Pendleton, CA.
Born Monday, August 13, 1973, at St. Joseph Hospital in Albuquerque, NM, Thomas graduated from Highland High School in 1991. He attended the University of New Mexico from 1991 to 1992, and graduated from the Metropolitan College of Court Reporting, Albuquerque, in 1994. He served as court reporter for District Court in Roswell from 1994 to 2003 under the Hon. Judges Schneider and Lynch, after which he moved to Federal Court in Albuquerque, under the Hon. Judge Johnson, where he worked until 2014. Thomas was then employed by Bean & Associates, Inc. and Paul Baca Professional Court Reporting, Inc. of Albuquerque. He was a Certified Court Monitor, Court Reporter and Federal Certified Realtime Reporter. Affiliations include the United States Court Reporters Assoc., National Court Reporters Assoc., and New Mexico Court Reporters Assoc.
Thomas was well-respected by his peers for his court reporting acuity, professionalism and dedication to his life’s work. Thomas was a fashion aficionado with an exceptional eye for color and design, always drawn to the finer things in life. He liked gardening, the outdoors, loved music, and had a wonderful sense of humor. He loved his conure parrots, Duckie and Sunny, whom he took on many adventures. Thomas worshiped at Adat Yeshua in Albuquerque for several years, occasionally visiting Eastern Hills Baptist Church. He appeared in the TV series “Better Call Saul” Season 2, Episode 6 as a court reporter extra. Profoundly loved, he will be sorely missed.
Visitation will be Sunday, June 12, 2016 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at FRENCH – University. Funeral Service will be Monday, June 13, 2016, 10:30 a.m. at Eastern Hills Baptist Church, 3100 Morris St. NE.

 MICHAEL H. RICE Michael H. Rice, age 75, passed away on May 15, 2014. Mike was a long time resident of Santa Fe, NM. During the process of his passing he was surrounded by his loving family.
Mike Rice - Miguel Arroz as he sometimes called himself - led a beautiful and powerful life. Mike was born in Monahans, Texas on January 18, 1939, to his beloved mother Mildred Hudson Higgenbothem Rice and father Ernest Glenn Rice who preceded him in death. His family lived in several West Texas towns and settled in Breckenridge, Texas, where Mike was raised. He remained proud of his West Texas heritage his entire life. Mike enlisted in the Marines at 18, and a very proud one at that. He served for 6 years, stationed in Twentynine Palms, CA. Because Mike was so intelligent he was encouraged to be trained and educated as a court reporter, reporting military proceedings around the world. After the Marines he moved to New Mexico where he worked for a firm as a court reporter eventually being recruited by Judge James Scarborough to work for the 1st Judicial District Court. This began his "tense, nervous and exciting" 25 year career as a court reporter for many Judges who respected his detailed and meticulous work, retiring as one of the best in his field.
Mike went on to a second career as a PGA Professional. Golf was a passion to Mike Rice and something he was incredibly gifted at, it was his love and joy. He taught, played and lived his passion for 20 + years. Mike prided himself in all he did. Mike not only had a full professional life, but he had an amazing personal life, filled with love, deep commitment, loyalty and high standards for himself and those around him.
Mike is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Soledad Rice, his protective and beloved dog Dempsey, his step children Phillip Romero (Cynthia), Martha Baca (Leonard), Angela Couleur (Doug), Anna Rossiter (Rudy), and his step grandchildren, Marc and Lindsay Romero, Monique Glidden (Chris), Amanda Baca, Nikole and Erika Couleur, Kaitlin Rossiter and their children. Mike is survived by his daughters Debbie Rice Johnson (Greg), Michelle Rios Rice (Opaa Boomer), grandchildren Nathanial, Megan, Jubal, Ethan and Robert Johnson, Tanya Martinez, Michael Martinez (Melissa), and great-grandson Mason Martinez. Mike is survived by his step sister Beverly Vanghn and step brother David Browning, both from Texas. Mike lived his life fully and had a good life. He will be greatly missed and always loved. He and his way will never be forgotten, as it was legendary. Barbara Jane Webster Ellis, 70, of Farmington, died on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013 in Farmington. She was born Sept. 19, 1942 in Bay Village, Ohio to Glenn Allen Wright and Marjorie Grace Ruff.
Barbara was a graduate of Port Huron High School in Michigan. She attended Port Huron Junior College in Port Huron, Mich. and was a licensed Court Stenographer Reporter (CSR). She was a restaurant owner, secretary, computer typesetter and a court reporter. She won 2nd place in a nationwide typing contest. She entertained and served everyone that came into her and her husband, Ken's restaurant, Oliver's.
Barbara was a member of the New Mexico Court Reporter Association and the Four Corners Ramblers R.V. Club. She loved to play cards and was wickedly competitive.
Although Barbara was not a member of any church, she had amazing faith. She loved to make people laugh and had a great sense of humor. She could cuss better than anyone. She was an amazing wife, mom and sister. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Leroy Ellis; her parents and her sister, Judith Ann Gott.
She is survived by her husband, Marvin Wayne Webster; son, Mitchell Levi Webster; daughter, Kari Lynne Webster; brother, William Edward Wright and her sisters, Marjorie Ellen Skaggs, Susan Jean Barath and Glenda June Griego.

Great Falls court reporter enjoys unique, challenging job
It's a fast growing career field; the U.S. Department of Labor Statistics expects a 14% increase in court reporter jobs over the next 10 years. But becoming one can be challenging; according to the U.S. Department of Education, many court reporting schools have a graduation rate between 2% and 14%.
Huseby noted, "There's a high demand for court reporters. You can get a job pretty much anywhere in the country." But the primary tool of a court reporter is not easy to master; Huseby explained, "There are 24 key and each key can be pushed at the same time, unlike a typewriter."
Judge Dirk Sandefur appreciates the expertise that Huseby brings to the job, adding, "I am generally familiar with the machine. I'm not at all qualified to operate one. It takes a great deal of experience and training." But once you learn the unlimited combinations of the unmarked keys, Huseby says, it's a piece of cake: "It is like second nature. It's just like automatic."
Huseby says he's not worried about a machine taking over his job one day, because audio recordings are not always clear and voice recognition software can have a tough time picking out distinct voices in a crowded room. He noted, "I think there will always be a need for court reporters. There's that need for the human input and the human ear to distinguish what is actually being said, who's saying what." Which is good news, because he says that he's not going anywhere: "Oh, I don't have any plans to retire."
Helen W. Cordova of Albuquerque passed away Saturday, January 28, 2006 after a long illness. Ms. Cordova, a former resident of Raton, NM, began her career as a legal secretary in Raton. Ms. Cordova was a well respected court reporter at the Bernalillo County District Court with the Honorable Paul F. Larrazolo and the Honorable Richard J. Traub; she later established her own court reporting business and retired in 1995. Ms. Cordova was a president of the New Mexico Court Reporters Association and received the Mary Walters Distinguished Service Award in September, 1997. Ms. Cordova was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Juanita Weaver of Raton, NM. She is survived by her daughters, Sherrill Staley, Deborah Goodnow (Mark Caldwell), Karen Cordova-Andrews (Christopher); grandchildren, Douglas Auringer, Sheila Valerio (Robert), Adam Cordova (Kala), Devin Goodnow (Jeanette), Andrew Cordova-Andrews, Christian Andrews, and Brett Andrews; and great-grandchildren, Haley, Isaac, Dominic, Amanda, Serena, and Daniel. She is also survived by her brothers, Thomas Weaver (Dora) of Tucson, AZ and Raymond Weaver (Betty) of Glendale, CA; sister, Gloria Weaver Wood (Seldon) of Pueblo, CO; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated Wednesday, February 1, 2006, 9:00 a.m., Shrine of St. Bernadette 11401 Indian School Road, NE.
